Grants
There may be Federal Grant funding available for your IT purchases! Both the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have programs to fund various types of IT deployments. For example, the DOJ has the COPS Technology grant program which has funds available for data information-sharing and voice interoperable communications ($159M) and the Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary grant program which will fund justice information sharing projects. In the past these funds were earmarked by Congress, but now, they are awarded on a competitive basis. DHS has large funding programs – from the State Homeland Security Grant of $525M to the Firefighter Assistance Grant ($662M). Both agencies have criteria that are used to allocate funds, and much of the coordination is done through State Administrative Agencies.
The most successful grant applications are those that cover interoperability and information sharing among multiple agencies, so if you’re after grant funding, work with other organizations in your county or city and try to coordinate your efforts. CJIS GROUP online research databases save valuable time and provide research information for the planning, procurement and contracting of information technology systems. CJIS GROUP tracks Criminal Justice and Public Safety grant sources and funding awards. The Grant Database provides agencies and companies with grant listings, solicitation guidelines and award information.
We recently attended an online webinar hosted by Gary Cooper, Vice President of CJIS GROUP, where he outlined all the major grant programs, how they are administered, and what information they are looking for in assigning grant funding. By joining CJIS GROUP as a client, this information is free to you. IT vendors pay to get access to this information in order to identify upcoming opportunities.
